1000 mile Challenge
- LONDON March 2nd to 13 April 2003
Well Paul is at it again - if
you thought it was an incredible achievement to finish two Comrades
marathons - back to back read on!
6 intrepid poms (2 females
and 4 males) of which one is Paul Selby will start off at 4.00pm
on Sunday the 2nd March to complete 1 mile every hour for 1000 hours.
That in total time equates to 6 weeks of solid running / walking
- the most any one will be able to sleep is 1 1/2 hours at a time
for the entire period. The half dirty dozen who live on a bus, as
they are being called, will be living, sleeping and eating on a
double Decker bus along the very busy Flora London Marathon route
that spans across London, for the entire period. Total distance
run every day - NEARLY A MARATHON every day for 6 weeks. Just to
add another sting to the tail - the 1000 hours officially finishes
at 9 am on the 13th April (the same day as the Flora London Marathon)
all remaining competitors have to start the official marathon at
9.30 - yeah you got it after running for 6 weeks they still have
to run another marathon - this will then determine who the overall
winner is - the first finisher over the line will be declared the
official winner of the 1000 mile Challenge.
WHY would someone want
to do something so crazy - because THEY CARE- the event is being
held to raise funds for 4 charities in the UK.
More about Paul Selby -
what makes this man tick to be able to push his body and mind to
the absolute limits by running double Comrades in a total time of
just over 21 hours and now wanting to perform what must be one of
the ultimate challenges that any human being can put himself through.
Being privileged to being married to Paul, I often wonder what makes
him tick - I have not yet found the answer other than that he is
passionate about his running and sees no event as being too much
of a challenge. Paul is also an extremely charitable man and believes
in giving back to the community - hence his continuos involvement
with running for charity.
“Paul’s latest challenge
was to complete his 500th standard marathon/ultra in conjunction
with his running of the 20th Comrades marathon in June 2004. This
necessitated running 33 marathons or ultras between February and
May 2004. Needless to say, he completed this challenge and who knows
what opportunities for new goals will be set in the future! |
